We have officially entered the Ber months, but for the tourism industry, before all the holiday buzz takes over, September calls for another reason to celebrate– the World Tourism Day. This year, the theme is centered on the digital agenda and artificial intelligence to redesign tourism. In harmony with this, this month’s newsletter talks about the basics–AI in the Travel and Tourism Industry, how it is used, its impact, and its future. Read more below:

How is the use of AI transforming the travel and tourism industry?

Because AI relies on popular online data, it risks worsening overtourism by mainlining mainstream destinations unless users explicitly request sustainable options. AI should serve as a starting point rather than the final decision-maker.

Concurrently, travel companies leverage AI—including voice platforms, flight disruption reporting, and expense automation—to drive operational efficiency, streamline customer service, and personalize traveler communications.

Ultimately, while AI is fundamentally reshaping tourism operations and customer interactions, responsible travel still depends on human judgment to balance efficiency with sustainable choices.

The Impact of AI in the Travel and Tourism Industry

With travel companies using AI for creating personalized itineraries and generating visuals for destination previews, the tourism industry is seeing a rise of personalized digital assistants or AI agents that function as travel companions. Popular tourist cities are also using smart city initiatives to track tourist movements which helps in managing tourist flow. In terms of human resources, AI causes both positive and negative impacts for employment opportunities. Technical and analytical roles are in-demand and management roles are also in-demand due to need for strategic leadership in digital transformation. Traditional tourism roles, however, such as travel agents, tour guides and front desk staff are facing risks due to the employees’ tasks that can be done by AI automation.

The Future of AI in the Tourism Industry

As inferred by researches on AI and the travel & tourism industry, future developments for travel using AI seem exciting especially with the streamlining of airport experiences, travel optimization, and personalization capabilities. But while these exciting studies expect good results, there is also a risk of fraud and dynamic pricing which can be detrimental to travel companies.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, as AI continues to be adopted by businesses, there is an urgent need for travel and tourism businesses to use AI as a strategic priority, investing in talent, and fostering collaboration between AI and humans.

While seamless experiences and more efficient logistics are ensured, a safe, ethical and sustainable usage of this technology should be advocated to guarantee better results.
