June 2026 – A Controversy: The Packing List

×

Social media and blog posts are full of it– how to pack for travel, either how to pack for a different season, or how to pack lightly. But, let’s face it, a packing list will always be subjective and there might be no ultimate list since it all boils down to preference and need. This month, we bring you some lists that one will either agree on or will make their eyebrows raise:

Minimalist Travel vs. “Just-in-Case”

Since time immemorial, there has been a debate on the “what-ifs” of packing vs bringing what is needed only. Minimalists argue that carrying a number of suitcases limits mobility, may cause injury, and may increase baggage fees. On the other hand, “just-in-case” travellers also offer a solid point as many destinations have varying weather conditions, some necessities are needed for special occasion trips or just-in-case there’s a special event or happening (e.g. attending a play, or going to a fine dining restaurant) or the need to be ready for unforeseen circumstances.

Buy Local or Pack from Residence

Packing from home and buying local both certainly has its pros and cons. While bringing items from home will have you an automatic checked-in luggage, it will surely save you time for buying necessities instead of allotting it for leisure instead. On the other hand, buying locally will save you luggage space, or you may be able to help a local merchant.

Dirty Laundry? Re-wear your clothes!

With the exception of underwear, socks, workout clothes, and sometimes swimwear, it is a truth universally acknowledged that one can re-wear their clothes during travel! Clothes which were worn in the airplane are also recommended by frequent flyers to only be worn for transit days to avoid mixing lingering travel smells into your clean clothes. Outerwear however, can be worn repeatedly as bringing a number of it can be bulky; base layers and some clothes depending on the fabric, can also be worn more than once as it may be odor-resistant and are quick-drying.

(Un)necessary Electronics/Tech

A strong case for debate may be for this category; travel bloggers and influencers may recommend having in your essentials noise-cancelling headphones, dedicated travel pillows, and bulky camera gear (unless you’re a travel photographer or travelling for work) which may take-up unnecessary space in your bag. Should one have a condition where the abovementioned are needed, some tech or electronics can be left behind. Check your itinerary as you may not need some of what you’re bringing, or the accommodation may have it on hand such as hair irons, steamer, and etc.
