The Philippines: Dumaguete & Siquijor
Apo Island in Negros. Image courtesy of Alex Stutely. Dumaguete and Siquijor (together with nearby Apo Island) have long been known as excellent diving destinations. However, the area is now beginning to build a reputation as an excellent holiday destination for non-divers too. Dumaguete city is a small, attractive city with interesting historical and architectural attractions such as the Siliman University building, and the old Spanish watch tower. One of the main focal points of the city is the seafront promenade. Behind the city loom two large mountains known as the Twin Sisters. To the south of Dumaguete City, in the area of Dauin, there are several good resorts. Most of these resorts offer scuba diving. One of the best is a boutique property called Atmosphere Resort which opened in November 2008. Immediately in front of Dumaguete City is a large, beautiful island called Siquijor. This island can be reached from Dumaguete by ferry, and the crossing takes approximately one hour. Siquijor is a lovely, peaceful place with lush greenery, sleepy fishing villages and white sandy beaches. It is an extremely relaxing place to stay, and also a good jump-off point for day trips to Apo Island. Apo Island is a marine sanctuary, and home to a wide variety of fish, corals and turtles. Snorkelling and diving here are world-class. |
