Our Commitments
We are passionate about the Philippines. That is why we want to maximise the benefits that tourism can bring, whilst protecting the heritage, culture, and wildlife of the country. We also feel strongly that our work should directly benefit the communities that our clients visit wherever possible through sustainable travel, environmental protection and social projects. Child ProtectionChild protection is part of the Blue Horizons Supplier Code of Conduct, which is a contractual agreement between us and our hotel partners and other suppliers. Our contract states what we expect and demand of our business partners in terms of their actions and attitudes towards protecting children and maintaining fair working conditions. They also enable Blue Horizons to apply and enforce its zero-tolerance policy on child sex tourism. Any violation of the relevant provisions will result in the contract’s termination. In addition, we are currently working towards implementation of the guidelines of The Code - a code of conduct designed to protect children from sex tourism. To find out more please visit the website for The Code. Coral Reef ProtectionThe Philippines is a part of the Coral Triangle, and as such has one of the most diverse marine ecosystems on our planet. This ecosystem has for centuries withstood the forces of nature, managing to continually renew itself. However, the increases in tourist developments together with the rise of sea surface temperature due to climate change (which leads to mass coral bleaching) now pose a clear threat. According to the World Resources Institute, 75% of all coral reefs worldwide are already at risk. We have partnered with a leading marine biologist, Lee Goldman, to identify the reefs most at risk from damage due to tourism and climate change, and we have started working to protect these reefs in colaboration with the local authorities. Local SourcingEven within the Philippines, there is a significant disparity in the wealth and prosperity of the different regions. Whenever we operate tours, we try to engage the services of local communities and suppliers. We actively choose locally produced goods in preference to imported ones wherever possible, and we promote local products and services to guests by recommending local restaurants, markets and craft centres wherever possible. For more information about any of these projects, or to find out more about the charities and initiatives that we support, please contact us. |
