Batanes is the smallest and the northernmost province of the Philippines. The provincial capital is called Basco.
The Batanes islands are extremely interesting, because they are so different to the rest of the country. The ten islands are located 160 kilometers north of the mainland of Luzon and about 190 kilometers south of Taiwan. They are separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province by the Balintang Channel, and separated from Taiwan by the Bashi Channel. Only three of the islands are inhabited.
The people of Batanes are called Ivatans. The northern half of the Ivatan homeland is now a part of Taiwan, and the southern half of the Ivatan homeland, the islands of Batanes, formally joined the Philippines in the 18th century. Houses in Batanes are made of grey stone, and have strong walls to withstand storms and rough weather. The islands are very scenic, with lush green hills and a rugged coastline. Most of the inhabitants are either farmers or fishermen.
